Doug’s broad-ranging talk will cover the history of the Quota Management System, an overview of Talley’s operations, both Deepwater and Inshore, with special reference to Nelson. And he will dispel some of the myths about bottom trawling. He welcomes comment and questions from the floor.

Doug Saunders-Loder has been President of the New Zealand Federation of Commercial Fishermen for 21 years. The NZFCF is a national organisation that represents and advocates for its members, the independent, privately owned vessel owners. Predominantly smaller inshore operators spread throughout the country and linked by a network of 27 Port Associations. The organisation was formed in 1958 and current membership stands at about 375.

Over his four-decade seafood career, he has held various Industry roles, including as a cray fisher, Resource Manager for Talley’s Group since 1985 and during that time has been Chairman of the Southern Inshore Finfish Mgmt. Co.Ltd, Challenger Scallop Enhancement Co. Ltd, Challenger Dredge Oyster Co. Ltd and held Directorships in Fisheries Inshore NZ, Deepwater Group Limited. A recent Industry restructure has seen the latter two amalgamate with Seafood NZ and Doug now sits as a Councillor on both the Inshore and Deepwater Councils of Seafood NZ, the parent body. His exceptional rapport with all stakeholders, including fishers, media and industry peers has cemented his reputation as a respected advocate and go-to expert. Doug was awarded Life Membership of the NZFCF in 2023 and he also received the prestigious Lifetime Membership Award at the 2024 Seafood Stars Awards in Auckland.
