Burnt Shadows by Kamila Shamsie

REVIEW BY LAURA FINDLAY

This is an absolutely exquisite book that does not gloss over the sadness of war but gets close to it, examines it from all angles.

From the first pages it is clear that Shamsie is an excellent writer and so this bold novel that travels through Japan, India, Pakistan and America, does not get lost in its length or breadth - it remains close to a truth throughout and tells a wonderful, highly-readable story. Hiroko was probably my favourite character in 2017. I want her to appear in every book I read with her poise, stoic courage, insight and hunger. I'm eager to read more novels from this author who is able to articulate life's most harrowing - and most simple - moments.
